‘bara bara’ in Japanese means broken into pieces or far apart.

The pandemic for me has meant not seeing my parents in Japan for over 2 years. This situation makes me feel a lack of being a whole in a very profound way.

Families and groups of people who we have taken for granted that we can get together with when we want were all broken into pieces.

The whole has been broken apart and kept apart.

We had to stay in bits and pieces and apart from one another.

I worked on this concept starting from a piece of wood representing our lives which I cast in resin. This was then cut up into pieces – ‘bara bara’ – and then put together with distances between them, some closer and some farther apart with the hope of staying connected in any way that is possible.
