“At the beginning of 2020 I was completing work for a 2021 museum retrospective. My focus for the past two and a half years had been curating 40 years of making, creating new work, designing the exhibition space and planning a catalog. Early March the pandemic hit, and our lives changed. In April I was informed by the museum that my show would be postponed until 2023. A few weeks later I fell while jogging and broke my shoulder – bummer on top of bummer. Many months of rehab followed mixed with disappointment and physical pain.
Once back in the studio I was planning to make work covered in black and gray to reflect my mood. However, during the fabrication process I started to see the upside of having the show postponed considering my injury. The exhibition deadlines would have been impossible to meet. The darkness started to lift, the world (me included) was on the mend. I re-entered my world of brilliant color. ”
